Neem Oil Extraction

Neem Oil Extraction

Neem oil is a broad spectrum botanical insecticide, miticide and fungicide treatment derived from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica). Neem trees are native to South East Asia, and is grown in many countries throughout the world, including India, Burma (Myanmar) and Australia. It is also grown in the United States, mostly in Florida as an ornamental shade tree, though its commercial production for neem products is increasing in the U.S. The neem tree is a botanical relative of mahogany. Neem tree products are associated with many agricultural and medicinal uses. It is widely relied on for herbal medicine in its native countries and is used in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical products as well as pest control in homes and crops. Therefore, neem oil extraction becomes very important in the neem oil extraction plant.

Extraction of Neem Oil

Neem seed extracts are most widely used in various industries. The extraction of neem oil as well as Neem seeds are extracted both by aqueous and solvent methods. It is one of the highest and richest source containing concentrated active compounds.

Aqueous Neem Oil Extraction

Powdered seeds, kernels or leaves are soaked overnight in water and the next morning the extract is strained through a piece of cloth; the desired volume of concentrated neem extract can then be used for desired purpose. Aqueous extract is generally rich in water soluble amino acids, pigments, soluble bitters and carbohydrates. Some manufacturers use the process of freeze drying the water-based neem extract producing a crystalline powder called "neem bitters" that is also water soluble.

Solvent Neem Oil Extraction

Organic solvents such as alcohol, dimethyl sulfoxide and ethers are also used to manufacture high concentration extracts. In one of the simplest processes of extraction of neem oil, the pure solvent is continuously poured over the mass of material to be extracted. It is percolated through the material until the removal of desired components is complete. The choice of solvent and temperature and time determine the efficiency of neem oil extraction.
